what to expect

Worship is the heartbeat of our community.
We gather in God’s radical welcome extended to all people.
We consider stories that have nurtured the faith of ancestors.
We share a meal with God at a table with a place for everyone.
We are sent into the world to love and serve our neighbors.

Our worship is traditional in the sense that it takes its shape and purpose from ancient traditions that Christians have followed for centuries. At the same time, our worship is contemporary in the sense that our words, songs, and prayers reflect the world around us, locally and globally.

frequently asked questions

Will I have to introduce myself?

Relax and be yourself – you won’t be asked to stand and say your name. You can expect to be greeted warmly when you walk in the door. We have disposable name tags that we encourage you to re-use if you come back, and we’d love for you to join us at coffee hour after worship.

What happens at a typical worship service?

Worship at Faith follows an ancient pattern as we celebrate the story of God’s love for us and all creation. Each week we Gather, receive God’s Word, share a small Meal of bread (or gluten-free cracker) and wine (or grape juice), and are Sent to love God’s world.

Are kids welcome?
Is there childcare during the service?

Children are certainly welcome at Faith. Even though our floorboards creak and it can feel like everyone hears everything, we welcome the wiggles and giggles that come with embodied worship! While we do not provide childcare during worship, we encourage families to worship together.

How do I know what’s going to happen during the service?

You’ll be given a bulletin (or a step-by-step worship guide) when you enter. The bulletin will tell you everything you need to know, with blurbs in the margins about why we do certain things in worship.

What should I wear?

People come to Faith from all walks of life, and you can see it in the way we dress. Some of us love to go out and experience creation before and/or after worship (including the pastor), so you may notice hiking apparel as well as more formal attire. Be assured that God accepts you as you are, not as you’re dressed.

When do I stand or sit?
Do I have to stand?

The worship leader will invite you to assume postures of attention throughout the service. This can look like inclining one’s heart (which can mean standing or otherwise elevating oneself) or visiting a prayer station during the service as you feel called. Feel free to experiment with prayerful postures to more deeply worship the living and communal God.

Will I have to sing in worship?

Faith Lutheran has a strong tradition of singing hymns in worship. You are invited to join in singing when you feel comfortable.

Do I have to put money in the offering plate?

Offering is a chance to give from our abundance and to acknowledge the many gifts that God has given us. No gift is required; if you do share a gift, you can be sure it will be used for God’s work in the community and shared with siblings in need, locally and globally.

Do I have to be Lutheran to take communion?

At Faith Lutheran, anyone who desires to encounter the real presence of God is welcome to come forward for communion. You don’t have to be a member; you don’t need to be a certain age; you don’t have to even be Lutheran. All are welcome at the table, which is prepared and set by God.
