A Random Act.....

A dear friend sent to me a marvelous UTube video.  The setting is Macey’s City Center, Philadelphia.  Shoppers are scurrying about, enthralled with the displays, listening to an elegant pipe organ, and engrossed as ever in their desperate mission of trying buy the right thing for the right person before the bell rings.  Can you relate?  For me, it’s too often the unwilling buying the unnecessary for the ungrateful.  Doesn’t it seem that this time of year heightens such a lousy attitude?  What shall I buy?  Will it be enough?  Can I even afford it?  Insanity!

Meanwhile, unbeknownst to the shoppers, the Opera Company of Philadelphia plus 650 area choristers had “infiltrated” several levels of this open courtyard mall.  At a given signal, these folks begin singing the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s “Messiah!”  The response of the surprised shoppers was interesting to observe!  Some are annoyed, others delighted, and perhaps a few poignantly reminded that there just might be more to this Season and to Life than being captivated by shopping.  What a concept!

So, kind friend, what will it take for us, this year, to focus on that which is eternally important?  The UTube video producers called it a “Random Act of Culture,”  I say it’s a reminder of the Divine Source who gifts us Life and Light.  Forever.  We know him by the name of Jesus:  God with us!  Immanuel.  Incarnation.  The Beloved, giving us all that money can’t buy!  Why look any further?

Go well in this season,

Pastor Alex
