A reed blowing in the wind?

The November election is rapidly approaching.  Are you weary yet at of all the rhetoric and misinformation that at times becomes simply overwhelming?  Not only is our presidency on the line, but in our state we have the “hot” issue of Marriage Equality, Referendum 74.  Our Council has gone on record to support this referendum, which is consistent with our belonging to the national Lutheran organization called “Reconciling Works” (http://www.reconcilingworks.org/). Regardless of your political or social issue beliefs and convictions, let us not be distracted by the winds harangues or diatribes. Rather, I would ask each of us to consider two things as we work at becoming informed voters.

First, let us be Children of God who do critical thinking.  That we would go beyond the sound bites and review/examine the issues, hopefully choosing reliable sources that can be trusted to give balanced perspectives.

Secondly, as People of Faith, to do moral deliberation, that is, to sift through the complex issues using the lens of scripture—specifically God’s mandate, as personified in Jesus, to pursue mercy, justice, and peace making.

Let’s be pro-active and incarnate our mission statement (check your Sunday bulletin) and the words “….your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”
